1.3 Cookbook Organization

This cookbook is organized into several distinct sections. Part [*], ``General Information'', provides a summary of current standards for videoconferencing and voice over IP protocols and reviews common architectural deployments for systems adhering to those protocols. The H.350 Directory Services Architecture for Multimedia Conferencing is also introduced in the first section following the introduction to LDAP directory services. Those wanting to learn the basics of the H.350 architecture, or those that would like an introduction to conferencing standards and LDAP directory services, should focus on this section.

Part [*], ``Deploying H.350 Components'', provides information for deploying H.350-enabled Directory Services, Endpoints, and Call Servers within an institution. This section walks the reader through a discussion of decision points encountered in a typical roll out. Step-by-step installation, configuration, and population instructions are provided for the Sun One (iPlanet), OpenLDAP, and Microsoft Active Directory Servers. Those wanting to, or needing to, deploy H.350 at their institution will benefit from the information and examples provided in the second section.

Part [*], ``Developing H.350 Components'', provides information related to the actual development and engineering of the various H.350 components. Code samples are provided that relate to situations encountered in Directory Services, Endpoint, and Call Server applications. For those needing to develop specific H.350 components, the third section is full of information and examples gained from the development of such tools.

Part [*], "Industry Uptake and Future Directions for H.350" describes commercial support for H.350 at the time of publication and suggests directions for future development and use of H.350.

The appendices (Part [*]) include detailed attribute descriptions, step-by-step LDAP configuration instructions, LDIF files, and some code examples in C, Java, PHP, or Perl.
